In the Presence of Light, Darkness Disappears
Successful watercolor paintings depend on contrast to easily distinguish one image from another. The viewer will most often enter a painting where the darkest dark meets the lightest light. Lani, in these new works, experiments with these dramatic swings between light and dark. From out of the darkness, you may notice, her subject matter shines boldly and takes the stage in your mind’s eye. Skillfully using a layering technique which applies staining watercolors one over another, Lani hopes we will be arrested by the experience of the presence of Light, which makes all Darkness disappear.
“May we each be the light the world requires in these dark times.” ~Lani Chaves

Artistic Freedom and This & That
“Artistic freedom is the right to create without being pressured to perform, produce, or succeed. I want to share a secret… I always feel like a beginner. But when I am at my best, as an artist, I experience the energy of the creative process and free expression without a need to show off technique, training, or expertise.
And if I have conjured up that creative voice, full up with intuition and trust in authenticity, my watercolors can be experienced as a doorway to deeper knowing. That is what I reach for. This is always my intention.”

Blooming Art in the Sandhills
A watercolor of mine, The Gardener’s Tuileries / 20 x 20, will be the inspiration for Horticulturalist / Artist Hilarie Blevins’ Living arrangement at Campbell House Gallery in Southern Pines on Saturday, March 29th | 10am-4pm and Sunday, March 30th | 12pm-4pm.
The 2025 exhibit will feature professional floral designers, talented local garden club members and local artists. Each will choose a painting or object d’art and create a floral arrangement interpreting the artwork.
